Kingsnake is a beautiful three-colored snake, endemic to the Santa Monica Mountains (Los Angeles), the Santa Ana Mountains (Orange and Riverside counties), and the Santa Rosa Mountains (Riverside County) in the United States.
They are species that love cold climates and live in very high mountain ranges, even up to 4,000 meters above sea level. Scientists discovered them in 1960. With 3 main colors on their bodies, they look like a work of art when mixed with nature.
That’s why they are named Kingsnake , which means king snake, or lord of this mountain area. The mountain with the most snakes is also called Kingsnake Mountain.
Living in an oxygen-poor, very cold environment, this snake’s body temperature is also extremely low. Most of the time they live underground, in crevices, cliffs, and places with few trees. It does not like to live in rotten tree hollows like most other snakes. They often appear on warm days in pine forests, or basking in the sun on rocky outcrops.
This snake’s favorite food is lizards and some small mice. It is not very big, only over 1 meter long.
They are extremely gentle and harmless to humans because they are non-venomous. Therefore, people in the area love to keep Kingsnakes in their homes, both to catch mice and as ornaments.
