According to research, this is actually not a mango, nor is it a banana. It is Akebi purple grape – a quite popular fruit, often found in the land of cherry blossoms with the nickname “Japanese chocolate grape”.

The reason for this name is because when Akebi trees bloom, they emit a scent similar to the smell of chocolate.

This fruit has the appearance of a purple mango or light purple sweet potato. The inside is opaque white and contains many black seeds similar to passion fruit.

Initially, only the Hokkaido region – the coldest place in Japan – could grow this plant. After that, it gradually expanded to China, the Korean peninsula, and was then grown in the Eastern United States, from the states of Georgia to Michigan and Massachusetts.

However, even though it is a “hybrid” between mango, banana and passion fruit, its taste is sweet with a bit of bitterness.
