Middlemist Red is a rare variety of camellia and also the rarest flower in the world because it currently only appears in two locations, a greenhouse in England and a garden in New Zealand.
This flower appeared in China about 200 years ago and was brought to England by John Middlemist in 1804.
Middlemist Red belongs to the camellia family, shaped like a rose (with rose-like petals and a characteristic pink color) but possesses many more special uses.
From 1804-1820 this flower variety disappeared until people saw it growing in a 91m long greenhouse in the camellia garden of the Duke of Devonshire’s Chiswick House mansion.
The rare camellia was lucky to survive when the site was destroyed by a bomb attack in the 19th century. The flower remained barren for many years in England and has only recently begun to flower. .
